Viagra used to be administered to neonates with pulmonary hypertension, as mentioned by User. When it worked it was impressive to see a marked increase in SpO2 and a significant decrease in O2 delivery. It has now been replaced by inhaled NO. As this treatment is now delivery as a gas the response times can be remarkable.

As I recall, Viagra was originally developed to treat angina, when they found it was not effective, they ended the study and asked for the remainder of the drugs back. The test subjects said "over my dead body" or something similar, and the people at Pfizer realised they had something very amazing on their hands. So using it for - ahem - ED - was a side effect being exploited

Sildenifil (and the other erectile dysfunction drugs) are being found to be helpful in a whole range of conditions, including pulmonary hypertension and Raynauds Disease. It's also used by mountaineers to treat altitude sickness.

I'm confused - A common side effect of it is, apparently, a headache and also a strange, aura like blueish vision.

How this would help a headache is beyond me!

I carry some on my bike in case I get a puncture. It's lighter than a pump.

That's why I thought it was an odd suggestion but for some reason, although I get the blinding aura, this isn't followed by bad headaches so it was thought worth trying.

I don't use it prophylactically, I save it for when the vision starts to go 'electric'. In fact, the headaches after the sildefinil are preferable to those with no treatment at all.
