I hate to fill the forum with more sad news but my heart really went out with this one. Read the article, such a great man.

NSPCC Chief killed in Cycle Crash
ONE of Britain’s leading child protection experts, Dr Colin Hawkes, died in a road accident in Holloway while cycling to work on Wednesday morning.

Dr Hawkes, 64, was on the way to his office at a children’s charity when he was in collision with a silver Peugeot in Carleton Road at the junction with Pleshey Road, opposite the Hilldrop estate, at 8am.

The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed to return to a north London police station on a date in May.

That is terribly sad, but can any legally knowledgable people here let me know why the killer was bailed and is now free for at least 4 months?

Sad to hear of the untimely death of one of the worlds good guys.

I'm certainly not knowledgeable in matters legal, but I'd guess its because he doesn't pose an immediate threat to the public. I doubt he went out that morning with the intention of killing somebody. Why it takes 4 months to get to court (where I'd guess it'll be quickly referred to a Crown court) is beyond me.

Everyone who is arrested on suspicion of an offence and not charged is entitled to bail. They can only be kept in custody under strict time limits whilst the investigation is ongoing and prior to charge. If the police do not have sufficient evidence to charge an offence they must bail the suspect or apply for extensions to the court. In this case their enquiries must be ongoing and he has been bailed pending the outcome. Even if they charge him they have to have real serious grounds to refuse bail such as a possibility of re-offending etc etc.

It can seem a bit strange but on the other hand if the guy is innocent ?

Either way it's a tragic, wasteful death.

Agreed.

In Brazil, the traffic cop gives hands you a phone. The judge is on the other end of the line and talks to you, the cop and the other party. A verdict is rendered and the penalty issued - instant justice .

Here is the road, and the named junction.

This is really close to home for me - I cycled along that road probably a hundred times last year, coming from Holloway to Victoria. My "local" is only a few hundred yards away.

To me, it is almost inconceivable that someone could be killed there. It's a quiet residential street. How could a situation arise that could generate enough to force to kill a human being?

Just terribly sad.

Oh Christ that's bloody grim.

I know it's tricky comparing cases but isn't lobbing a fire extinguisher towards some people comparable with lumbering about in a twenty frigging ton frigging truck without frigging checking the frigging mirrors?

Edit: Beautiful girl:
