Had a bike fit a while ago and the fitter turned both my shifters in slightly...Didn't think my upper body was un-comfortable are achy before the fit.. but it sure felt better after.
I've also found that if the hoods are angled in a bit (or curved like the Campag ones are), they fall into your hands more naturally and are more comfortable. I don't have a problem with numbness any more but I always wear mitts or gloves with gel inserts on the palms to protect my ulnar nerves ( or something).

if your hands go numb have a cheeky tug and it'll feel like someone else is doing it..... ;-)

Just rotating the bars backwards though five degrees will raise the hoods and tops by an appreciable amount.

Old enough to know better, too old to care!
It's due to pressure on the median nerve at the base of the hand.

Adjusting your position and padding should help.

As already suggested it is mainly due to excess weight on the hands.

I forget what I did a long while back, maybe moving the handlebars towards me for a more upright position, but once you notice the lower weight from a minor tweak the problem should go.

Gel pad gloves have helped me get over tingling and numbness in my left arm and wrist after severe nerve damage and I hope it will get better again when I change my bar tape as I have a set of shaped gel pads to go on the bars.....
