HTF did they tax it without an MOT??

I don't think you are checked at the time, I'd imagine the government won't worry about wether you have a MOT when they take your tax moneys!

The website refused to let me renew my tax a couple of weeks ago. It was due to run out on 30th June, but my MOT was due to run out a few days earlier.

All okay once the MOT was renewed.
And still only £20 a year for the tax. Fab.

Yes, it's pretty much a pond on the route of an old railway. One side has been done up as part of a Sustrans route and the other one recently like a road with a new tarmac section, there's just half a mile or so in the middle that is still "undeveloped"
