Night Train

Maker of Things
I do those little jobs that some people would rather pay to have done then to bother themselves with. They are usually clients already though. One has asked me to pop round and let the cat in as it was raining once. Others have asked me to change bulbs and fix loose door handles, etc. It only works because I have keys for most clients and they leave the money on the kitchen worktop for me.

I think the word that you are looking for Fnaar is "stackpipe" which carries you toilet and bathroom waste to the sewer and is openended at the top to let the 'orribile smels out, the downpipe carries your rainwater off of the roof to a soakaway.

That's the fella! I prefer "stinkpipe" though

I sent a calendar as a Christmas present to a relative living abroad and six months later paid her a surprise visit. There on the floor was the calendar right below the point at which she would have hung it had she been able to hammer a picture hook in to the wall:ohmy:
I added to the Christmas gift by buying a picture hook and small hammer.;)

My old man did a year at the last company I worked for doing odd jobs - i.e. putting up shelves and stuff - it helped 'em out for a bit, and kept my old fella busy (part time job) - he packed it in after I left..... TBH he doesn't need to work, but likes 'something to do' - retired....

But there is a 'big need' for these type of folk.

PS my Uni have worked out it costs over £30 to change a bulb....... especially high ceilings.....;)

The problem faced by a lot of these organizations is that they are not allowed to do these things, only qualified tradesmen are. Health and Safety gone mad and costing us a fortune.

Both of ours are busted....the Elec/gas folk don't wanna know......

The lock on my gas meter box snapped a while back. After a bit of a trawl around the web to find out who / how / what I ended up buying the replacement meter box latch at the top of this page. It arrived by post in a couple of days and took just a few seconds to fit.

Hope this helps.

I made a fair living on the side odd jobbing years ago.
The trouble is, you're often delving into areas you dont really have the skills to do 100% competently. I gave it up for that reason....and the final straw was urgently trying to re-roof someones shed ...in a howling gale
Nuffs enough at that point, i just dont need it.

That said, 99% of what i was doing was straight forward DIY....something a lot of people are not capable, or prepared to do. But you're right...i cant think of anyone in our area thats doing this kind of thing now.

I contemplated responding to someone on freecycle after someone capable of chopping a 15ft tree down

however i don't have a ladder, saw, axe or rope but i'm sure i could do it and been wanting to have a go at chopping a tree down for a while.

in terms of odd jobs, one of the first things on my wedding list was a power drill - useful for all manner of jobs about the house / car etc

while i'm here, odd jobs i've happily done / helped with

fixed flat door (don't like the maintenance guy coming in
fixed fridge door at millie's house
fixed wardrobe at millie's house
bodged multiple flatpacks plus a door from B&Q to make a nice big desk
removed and re-fitted radiator from millie's car
fixed car before AA got to me (got bored waiting)
gutted a citroen CX estate for parts (a friend is restoring one)
pulled citroen CX GT turbo engine from another CX (same friend wanted a turbo engine)
re-built my bass guitar

tis quite simple stuff really is being Mr Fixit
