I'm busy renovating (ruining beyond repair) an old wheel and have taken the ball-bearings out, only to discover I have an odd number. Are hubs ever built this way or has one been lost somewhere along the line?

So the fact that I've got 17 in total is less about design and more about there being one BB rolling around the garage floor somewhere. Super.

Chances are they will all need renewing anyway -take a couple to the LBS and get some new ones.
ps - always check the races are not pitted first. If they are then the hub is a skip job and so is the wheel unless it's a decent make.
