The sales are on and im off to have a nosey at the Tents and hopefully bag a bargain .. theres 3 im interested in but i cant decide whether i really need a porch or not ? it'l only be me in the tent and i wont be cooking so i dont suppose a porch is essential

Vaude Hogan Ultralight 1 Tent

Vango Alto 200 Tent

Eureka! Mountain Lite 3 Tent (but the 2 man version)

I'l hopefully be able to get a sleeping bag and mat whilst im there as well .. and then im ready for my first (short) camping tour

Errr .................sorry to disappoint you but the Milletts/Blacks tent sale started about 2 weeks ago. In the Cambridge and Peterbrough branches of both shops there is precious little left in the tent department I'm afraid. Blacks online have sold a lot as well. You might be lucky ....................

You are likely to be disappointed based upon my experience in one of the Leeds branches - the sale has been going on for some time and the only things left in stock before the bank holiday weekend were the cheap festival tents and they were being snapped up for the Leeds/Reading Festival.

You might have more luck ordering online.

I can't imagine having a tent without a porch. Where do you put dirty shoes or other wet and dirty stuff?

I missed out on a Vaude Taurus Ultralight for £135 with a £20 voucher as I dithered over whether to buy one. These tents are £249-279 normally. I was in the Cambridge store during the week before the August BH and it was mental .................

The woman I was touring with had a 20 year old version of the Vaude Taurus and absolutely loved it. She said it was so good they were still making it. Hers is only now falling apart after a huge amount of use.

Vaude is certainly much better quality than Eureka. I got a Eureka for my daughter and I am underwhelmed, to say it kindly.

The mountain 'lite' isn't very light.

We've been looking out for a new tent and features we would like are;

Room for two
Small porch big enough to make a brew in/store a couple of panniers
More than one opening to allow air through in hot weather
Quick set up
Subtle colour for wild camping
Under 3kg

Any suggestions?

4kg seems a bit lumpy for a tent that size and it doesn't look very well ventalated.

We've got a four year old Vango Spectre 200 (single door, bright blue) and the new model has a door both sides and is now green. (2.55kg.) I think we might go for that and get a small tarp for cooking under if we need it.

The MSR Hubba Hubba Hp is about the lightest seriously two person tent I know, at just under 2 kg. Using a stove in a real porch is never advisable, given the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning.

I wouldn't use a stove in a closed porch, was more something just to keep the rain off and I'm thinking a small light tarp that you'd only need to set up if needed might be a better plan.

Field & Trek were still selling the Karrimor X-Lite 100 tent yesterday. Reduced from £99.99 to £49.99. Shows a weight of 1.5kg. Dunno what it's like tho.
