I'm going to wander down to the War Memorial when I've had brekkie.

One of my biological grandfathers was a Desert Rat. He only ever spoke of the humorous adventures he had, but suffered years of night terrors and nightmares. He refused to say what affected him so bad.

The first decade of my life was during a nasty civil war so I choose not to glorify war. Instead it gives me a day to think about him and his wife who worked in a munitions factory. Two special people I never got to have a relationship with, and two people who wanted a better life for coming generations.

I'm back. It took just over an hour of my life getting there and back.

My heart sank when they started to read out all the names of the fallen in the town. A murmur went round when five Wakelins - probably brothers and cousins - were mentioned.

I remembered my great-uncle Percy Wilkinson, my grandfather's older brother, who survived and had frost-bitten ears to prove it.

Just got back. Suit, beret, regimental tie, medals put away for another year. Spotted some young lad from the village with an Iraq campaign medal and repeat cluster, and I hadn't realised he'd even been in. Fair play.

My Dads medals sadly he never saw them

I watched it on tv but turn it off when they start bringing religion in.

Went down to our local memorial along with Beavers Cubs and Scouts from my wife + kids group.

Paid my respects but the religious side of it all is not for me unfortunately.

Quite sobering when the read the names out of the fallen from our village, all brave men.

Our group ride pulled over into a parking and did the full last post, silence and rouse off a recording, timed to mobile phone networks.

Off to a beacon lighting at King Staithe Square later, if my legs have recovered. Hard going into that wind today - I should have let the e bike overtake earlier! ;)

Earlier this year, I cycled to visit Ypres and Tyne Cot with friends. The vastness of the lists of soldiers with no known grave and graves of "Soldier, Known Unto God" are surprising even if you know the numbers before you go. It's a good place to cycle to: fairly easy to reach, good cycleways, gently rolling terrain, cycle friendly hotels/hostels/guesthouses.

My grandad was a Desert Rat, survived and passed at the good age of 94

Daughter was at Wakefield Cenotaph this morning, with the Cathedral Choir
Last year, she laid the Wreath, not sure about this year - not had chance to ask

Now, SWMBO & daughter, gone back to the Cathedral, for the Beacon lighting

I had to stay here, as there's still damned fireworks going off, & the Dog is going mental
