I was wondering if they were intelligent enough to get out of the way. I have had a few near-misses, but no hits yet.

Perhaps we need a road-kill (or road-hit) thread detailing our attempts to cull the UK wildlife?

Or maybe not...

He hit my back wheel very hard and I was afraid I'd decapitated him like that picture of a Japanese cyclist that used to do the roundsxx(

Mine likes to sit on the top stair when I'm about to go downstairs. Repeated remonstrations that she'll not get fed if she kills me have as yet had no effect.

I'm afraid that's because it's not true. Without you, her diet will simply have to include more rodent. That's after she's had enough human, or you start to go off, of course....

Yello, I happened to be flicking through my French/English dictionary last night, so I know what you said!

I guess animals are no smarter than humans when it comes to making split second decisions about which way to jump - just think of the average ped on a shared path when you ding your bell from behind them....

Cats don't like 'em. Selfish stupid animals.

What do you do if a cat spits at you?

Turn the grill down. ;);)

Can you find me a wholy altruistic animal? Applying a human quality like that to an animal is just daft.

I think the others probably laughed at me swearing in French tbh! I don't talk a great deal (I don't in English either!) and my French is still pretty limited, so I'm usually pretty quiet on rides. It's certainly the first time I've sworn in French. I think it maybe eased a bit of tension for them, not knowing if I was injured or not.

I'm not a lover of cats, I think they're too clever and too selfish - I much prefer a daft but loyal dog, but I'd not wish harm on one. It would surprise me if it hadn't used one of it's lives. It took a fair old clout. Me plus bike must be around 90kg, I'd probably slowed to around 15kph when I hit it and it stopped me dead in my tracks. It wasn't dead in its but it'll definitely be very sore if it is still alive.

Animals can take a heck of a lot. We have a pathology specimen in the bone collection at the Department, a fox that was eventually killed by a car. But one leg had been broken some time before, probably in a trap, and the break had healed completely, albeit at a funny angle and with a couple of toes also shattered. That's several weeks at least. It was probably helped by being able to scavenge, perhaps from bins, as opposed to needing to hunt, but imagine, living for weeks with a broken leg as it healed crooked.

Mind you we often find humans with healed but badly aligned fractures, so we can do it too, if we have to.

They are massively less intelligent than us and have completely different pain mechanisms. They just don't feel pain in the same way and for the same reasons. You can stick a needle through a dog's skin and out the other side and he won't even feel it.
