ouch - overhopping is overrated, I've pretty much had enough of all beers starting to taste like grapegruit and my mouth turning inside out. Aaaaaanyway, favourite beers at the moment:
Corsendonck
Achel Trappist (this would probably be Westvleteren if I could get hold of it more often)
Grain Brewery Porter
Kernel export stout
DuckRabbit brewery Milk Stout - had this one at the Cask in Pimlico - a very fine establishment, it's really good, quite sweet though.

The local offy has been stocking Achel Blonde recently, so I've been getting stuck into it. Wish I could get hold of Kernel - the export porter is really good stuff.

You don't find the botanicals a little pedantic? I know that Adrian prefers Hendricks, which he finds whimsical without being too ostentatious.

Never really thought about gin in that way Claudine, I just like the taste. Bombay, Tanqueray and Hendricks are all nice drinks, certainly compared to the lesser quality ones which are more akin to firewater.

The local offy has been stocking Achel Blonde recently, so I've been getting stuck into it. Wish I could get hold of Kernel - the export porter is really good stuff.

I love Achel, of the trappists it's probably the second-least seen over here but just... really nicely done beer. The low-rent label is just a bonus.


As for Kernel - they're really guilty of the overhopping on their pale ales, to the point where I don't really enjoy them much, but teh stouts and porters are fabulous.


I forgot another of my favourite Belgians - Moeder Overste, cracking stuff. Also de la senne of (just outside) Brussels - their Saison and Stouterik are crackers.

Well worth it! I went in 2010 and it seems to be getting bigger each year. De Molen's own beers can be a bit hit and miss - they seem to have some quality control issues, especially with high gravity beers - but the good ones are excellent. I sometimes cycle over there, have a couple, then amble back.

Moriau geuze. Unfortunately, it's not easy to find and I have to order it from Belgium which isn't exactly cheap.

I can't remember the brand, but I certainly had a very nice geuze from there...and they have a superb wine selection, too.

It can be, but it can be done well. Maybe a bit like adding chilli to food.

I think that's a thought any right-minded soul can get behind.

My main requisite for a G&T though = Angostura bitters dashed over the ice and slice (of lime). Large measure of gin, small measure of tonic.

Thanks User482 - I'll think I'll just drive over to Brussels next time and pick up the order. The people I order it from own a bar which has an amazing selection of geuze, although they only open at Sunday lunchtime when the church next door emptys out.
