I'm no expert, and I'm sure someone will correct me, but I think this is why you collided. I remember being told by my driving instructor you go where you are looking. So now instead of looking at the "obstacle" in my path, I look at the middle of the gap to one side of it. Hope that makes sense. Glad you and the bike are OK.

+1 you always hit what you're looking at. you can hit a tiny piece of grit in the road if you look at it. Thankfully, the day i was looking in shock at a fledgling blue tit i managed to miss it by 1/2 cm and then able to pick it up and return it to safety, hence my title awarded to me by Admin

Oooh, poor you TMC, I hope you heal up quick. That sounds like it might be good news about your bike, I really hope so!

Here's one for you guys to relive:

There may have been a different cause of TMC's crash - that of the two step. It's the one where you go left, and the oncoming chap dodges to the right. You both see the problem, and now dodge the other way, and *smack*.

I ring my bell when coming up to a blind junction, it has saved me from collisions with other cyclists a couple of times.

That might reduce your chances of a collision, but really the only way is to slow properly and LOOK. That doesn't fit well with impatient human nature I guess.
