I'm visiting friends near Kendal and brought my 52/17 SingleSpeed with me. I'm not sure I'll use it though!

I quite fancied myself as being reasonably proficient at hills, but I now realise Suffolk hills are very different!

My usual rides are in Essex where there aren't many long hills over 10%. Last week I rode in Devon and the first long hill was 20%, but I was determined to make it, although I did stop a couple of times.

I would find 52/17 rather demanding for the Lakes! I cope ok on my fixed for many Yorkshire hills - well, I did when I was your age - but that is a gentlemanly 46/17.

One of my local hills here in Scotland probably would give more elevation than the whole of Suffolk combined.

I recall a ride that a few forum members were on. One of the members was on a single speed. We had a wager involving a Caad 9 if he could get up Winnats Pass without stopping. That is about half the length of Honister in the Lakes. Suffice to say no Cannondales changed hands.

When in Ipswich can remember cycling with a guy from Derbyshire. We could never understand how he managed to get up the local hills without changing gear.

The Howardian Hills and also Alston were "fun" on a bike geared with 53/39 and 25-11. I'd hate to try to do them on a single speed!

I always find it is best to avoid cycling with fiends especially in the hills, they never wait.
