oil chain only or sprockets as well?

When oiling the chainset, I know it is advised to drop oil on each link of the chain but is that sufficient to feed the cassette and chain rings or should these be oiled too?

A wipe with an oily rag on chain rings and cassette?

Getting my bike oiled up for its maiden trip since being rebuilt again.

Oil on top of lower section of chain, while spinning backwards. That carries the lube over the cogs, jockey rollers, etc.

Wipe off excess w/ rag.

... as opposed to top of upper section of chain, which would run through the outside of the cogs, jockeys etc - good point, thanks.

I have also been tipping a small amount of lube into a kitchen towel and running the chain through my hand with the towel, which lubes the chain and cleans off excess and any surface dirt without dripping any oil on the floor.
