I have an old REGA Planar3, c. 1982

I retrieved it from my brother, who had it in storage for about 10 years. I got the bog standard black belt since it needed a new one. According to the man in the HIFI shop the white belt gives better soundstage and depth - but since he also thinks that a £200 mains cable is better than a bog-standard one I wasn't going to immediately believe him.

Anyway, the black one works fine, turntable spins at a whisker over 33rpm, and sounds lovely. Spend your money on the cartridge if you must spend any, and don't believe the madness

You've got to invest to get the best

While you're at it, you'll need a few of these for your cables

"These Rosewood cable elevators are a simple and very effective way to eliminate microphonics and static electricity from affecting your cables.

Damping small vibrations that influence the signal of any audio cables lying on the floor can eliminate micro distortion. This can result in more focused sound from high end systems that are particularly sensitive to outside influences such as static electricity generated by carpets and friction."

It would seem that HiFi'ists talk inane drivel and throw their money at any household object repurposed as a groundbreaking new sound reproduction product.

Don't forget to talc your belt. I once read something like it smoothed out the dacay of sustained notes, you do get the best bollocks with audio shite.

You've not read enough wheel reviews in the cycling press then

Meanwhile don't forget the special orange-coloured speaker cable at £20 a metre:

QUAD were (in)famous for using cable like that at HiFi shows to connect their speakers.

They also once conducted a 'blind' Poweramp test involving their QUAD 11, 303 and 405 models changing Amps at random (or sometimes not changing them at all) and none of the reviewers could tell the difference between a valve Amp, a class 'B' triode Amp and a 'current dumping' Amp.

I remember the wireless world article on that back in about 1980. Excellent piece. The clever bit in their test was that listeners prefered a or b almost the same percentage when a and b were the same
