Army manoeuvres,

If you look at the photo , you will see two other infantrymen in the dugout ,looking forward, the one stood up , to me , is simply making the tank commander aware of their position , averting an incident,
Just an innocent photo really

Don't spoil a good photo with a valid explanation.

They're British infantry soldiers and you can see from the Blank Firing Adapters fitted to the rifle muzzles that it's an exercise. Oh and the tank is British as well of course. I'd say the photo was staged for comic effect since the Challenger wouldn't have the gun barrel at that low elevation in normal travel.
