Theres some impressive sized Bee's about at the moment, emerging Queens looking for food and somewhere to start a nest.

All that's in our loft is a gun cabinet, belongs to the previous owners, it went up there easy enough apparently, but they haven't yet worked out a way of getting it back down.

I'm just enjoying my breakfast before I make the epic journey of discovery.
It makes sense that whatever it is is on the joists, but the little scrabbling noises do resonate.
So, sweepstakes may rule out forgotten masterpieces, unless the star!ings bats or bees have smuggled one in since I insulated the loft.
Neglected frames would be nice, or an original series one landrover perhaps?

I did evict a large wasp/hornet on Sunday, it would have been approx 30-35mm long.

Hmmmm, nothing obvious. There are too many cobwebs for it to be longeared bats, and they'd be visible in the purlins. They don't like webby attics.
Can't rule out pipistrelle, as they get into tiny crevices and under the felting, and I have no intention of disturbing any of that in case they are in there.
No birds or anything else, no nests or jackdaw constructions.
No obvious wasp nests. I had wondered whether the noise was the sound of little waspy jaws chomping on the timber.
It could well be mice then. No probs for me as we don't see them in the house.

We have had bumble bees in our loft for the past two years. Apparently, they do not reuse old nest sites so I wasn't too worried the first year. Sure enough they moved along a bit the second year! Couldn't hear them though despite being quite large. We have left them to it. Bumbles are the insect version of big furry pandas.
