Old chain

I have just fitted a "new" chain to my bike.
a) I noticed that the packet carried a date of 1958, that means it is older than me.
b) It is a nickel plated Brampton made by Renold, a prototype that never made it into production, (too expensive) that father purloined when he worked for Renold chains, so really it should be in a museum, or being gloated over by a collector, not being ground into dust by me.

Ground into dust ?..i suspect it'll outlast new chains by a long long way. Probably a fit it and forget it forevermore scenario.

I understand your reluctance...but its no good on your shelf.

I would doubt that it is of any cash value, but it may be worth something to a collector maybe? As you have now fitted it, look after it.

Someone on the Velo Vision forum recently got £47 on Ebay for some empty branded cardboard boxes that had contained Campag components. That's right: empty boxes.

There is a collector for pretty much anything out there, it's just a case of whether you want to put the effort into finding them and parting them from their money...

I reckon it's better being used - like Dinky toys. That said, an old lamp or mech can almost be a work of art, so I can understand collecting beautiful stuff, and not necessarily using it, but it must be displayed. I hate the thought of stuff locked away in cupboards, like people who own art only to store it in a bank vault.

+1 I loved james mays toys programme where he outbid collectors for a train took it out of the box and binned the box. locking art away so people can't see it is criminal. don't buy stuff to put on a shelf , buy it to use it.
