But why would Mick Jagger for example need more money? If his wealth dropped from say 300 million to 100 million because the Rolling Stones stopped touring, surely he/they could continue with his/their lifestyle.

Jagger is rather different. One hears stories that he is very motivated by the continued accumulation of wealth despite having more than enough to maintain his lifestyle in his dotage. It's just what he is.

I can't remember any old acts that I've seen and are no longer any good. The guy that blew me away recently was Jimmy Summerville. His falsetto is just as clear and pure as it always was

I think there are some who are fabulsoulky rich ad don;t need it. There are some who can probably burn through 20-30 m a year on expensive house/yachts/jewellery/cars/holidays etc etc. After several years of doing that, when their income is plummeting due to people not buying CDs anymore yet they want to continue their lifestyle, I can see how they feel the need to keep workings.

Mick Jagger is probbaly far too rich to feel that but I think he's probably in a very small select group.

I'm intrigued, who was the other one?

Manowar. At the Marquee Charing Cross Road.. not that I thought they were crap (though most would beg to differ), it was that the volume was at far too an extreme level for the size of the venue. I really thought I was going to damage my hearing that night.

I can understand that, I went to see Yes at Bristol Hippodrome many many years ago, that was far too loud and made the whole experience a bit crap.

I'm pleased to say Johnny Depp looked a bit rough on TV this morning.

Back to the original post, there was an interesting article about The Stones in, I think, The Observer a couple of weeks ago which basically said they carry on now as just a cash generating machine.

Willie Nelson is apparently touring again, & in his 80's!

The royalties alone some of these old artists make is a small fortune.
Look how much the disgraced glitter (spit) was making whilst in prison.

some of them must just do it for the buzz of performing still. A lot of them I certainly
Wouldn't give up time or money to see .

I saw Chuck Berry a few years ago. In truth, he was total crap, but just about carried by a great band, and the sight of an 80+ year old doing the duck walk meant no-one cared he could no longer sing or play.

Two I've seen more than once and could clearly see their decline writ large were; Van Morrison - great band, worsening voice and zero stage presence. Mavis Staples - still living off past glories and spent most of the show babysitting her sister Yvonne who I think had 'over-medicated' that night.

Also, I'd have to say regrettably that much as we love him, the audience are expected to show a lot of patience for a man in his 80s no matter how great he once was. Lee Perry, please consider retiring gracefully. By 'gracefully', I meant 'NOW'!

I suspect many performers carry on for reasons beyond financial gain.

Power, relevance, influence, recognition are probably all attractive to the right type.

I've always wondered about the difference between Andrew Ridgley and George Michael. One adjusted his lifestyle and retired to live what appears to be a very comfortable life in Cornwall and the other carried on, with a questionable outcome.

Although I gather a reunion is on the cards!!

Its about what makes you tick.

Dylan is one of my main men but I wouldn't go and see him live again. I'm glad I saw him at the Albert hall a couple of years ago and he wasn't bad with some of his more recent stuff but he murdered the few old songs he played! At least that was before he started his current phase of covering old standards.

Going to see Graham Nash tomorrow night. From what I've heard of his new album voice still sounds good but will see how it stands up in a live show.
