Answering comment on the CTC road books contents . The information contained in each is best described as a list of city/town place to place route sheets . From a given obivous start point the direction of travel and turns are listed together with intermedite mileage . The changing condition of the road surface along your route is also noted, as are acsent and decent . A reverse of each route is included though in less detail . Area CTC branch HQ are noted .. Adverts for bicycles, services & lodgings are given in the back of each copy

The Jacksons book is more of touring guide .Together with a detailed route, it also lists points /places of interest, recreation and amusement along the way . Fishing rights for rivers are given .{Catch your own dinner?} . Also shown are drawning of certain notable land marks/buidings .
Inside the front cover is a ad for a Hepworth bicycle .

Another item this topic also draws upon is old road signage, mile posts & warning boards . Another thread perhaps .

The old Bartholomews maps are a work of art imho . All part of the social history of cycling . A vast topic in its self .
I agree that they look beautiful.
Unfortunately I find things that aren't works of art easier to use.
 
This was the poster used to advertise a Bartholomews exhibition at the National Library of Scotland a few years ago.

A good read of adventure travel by bicyle is,Round The World On A Wheel by John Foster Fraser . First published in 1899 it is the tale of by its writer and his two companions . 19,237 miles ,across seventeen contries and 3 continents .It was reprinted in 1989 . ISBN -10:0708842682 . 500 pages
Imho a very good story of epic travel by bicycle .
