Got my eyes on an old columbus steel frameset as a bit of a project, however i would like it to run all modern groupset etc if possible.

Have made some enquiries and it's got 130mm spacing so modern 700cc wheels will be fine, it's English threaded bottom bracket so i'm assuming hollowtech would be fine?

Anything obvious or horrible i need to look out for if i look to go ahead?

I've built up usind modern stuff but this would be my first older frameset!

28.6mm seat tube is common for old steel frames, which most modern band-on front mechs won't cater for, requiring either a shim or separate 28.6mm clamp band plus a braze-on mech.

Many such frames won't have modern recessed brake mounts, which can give rise to some interesting challenges.

Also headtube/steerer/forks may need a traditional (i.e. non ahead) 1" threaded headset and a 22.2mm quill stem, so probably not modern oversized (31.8mm) bars.

the particular frame I'm considering has braze on front mech, I think probably added at a later date which would make things easier.

@fossyant - whilst I see the appeal of a sympathetic build this one (if it happens) will be done over time and on the cheap as I'm looking at the possibility of it becoming a winter bike / commuter. I fancy trying steel but making it cheap to build / run and easy to service!

ive got a shimano sora groupset on my raleigh scorpio. it went on great. i also went with the old front mech that came with the bike and this works fine integrated with the sora parts. all i needed extra was an interesting rear mech hanger purchased off ebay for six pounds. i did need longer reach brakes for the rear because its an xl frame.
