Maybe. I think the fact that I didn't have time to react was also a factor. If I'd tried to break my fall I could imagine a wrist or a collarbone snapping under the strain of the impact.

I know I’ve a strong skull, number of times I’ve hit it on beams in pubs!

I have spent about 6 weeks in hospital over the years from varying accidents , worst I had was a suspected fractured pelvis , and that was after falling off a terraced house roof , it’s very strange waking up in hospital with lots of people looking down at you ! ,
I was lucky , the ones looking down were the Angels of the NHS and not Winged Ones !!

about age , fitness strength and muscle loss , I saw a National Geographic production in the 90’s , it was very informative and there was a human experiment which concluded that it is possible to regenerate and retain muscle mass in our later years , from memory it was highlighting improving independence and quality of life after 70 and a continuance of such ,
 
Ive started weightlifting again 2 days a week. I want to be able to squat my own bodyweight again. I appreciate the fact there is more to overall fitness than just cycling
