I was once on a train from the south coast with other CCers I think. A load of people got on at Gatwick and started complaining about bikes. "They should have a special carriage for bikes" complained one woman. "Well they do and you're in it" retorted one of my companions.

I remember the good old days when about 20 kids (plus a couple of accompanying grownups) used to just turn up at the station unannounced and pile our bikes into the guard's van to get to wherever our club was riding that day. Do they not have guard's vans any more? It's been a while since I tried to take a bike on a train.

privatisation removed common sense from rail operators .

GWR have now decreed that from Monday next week you can no longer turn up unannounced on a HST with a bike. you need a reservation whatever time of day you travel. the clanky stopping service is not affected though.

the best thing . they havent ;listed what is HST and whats not. I as a train nut know it should be the services pulled by a class 43 but i am not sure GWR will think that

That sounds like a bad thing to me - dunno which trains are HST, so to be on the safe side we'd better say they all are....

Fair weathered, fair minded but easily persuaded.
Is it GWR that are getting the high speed trains like we have on Southeastern?

If it is it's the bullet trains that are the high speed trains and we don't need reservations so i am surprised that you will. We just have the standard, not after arrival in London at 7am and not out of London before 7pm.

A sensible train company would look at the market, listen to genuine customer feedback, slash prices, and put a guard/guard's van on. They'd be the most popular train company around, and make a squillion pounds, I reckon.

I may be completely ignorant of the economics of trains, however. But I had a dream....
