NO in an ideal world we would all be able to use the same roadspace safely as there would be proper punishment for not doing so. segregated cycle infrastructure is not the way forward.

I completely agree. I lived in Naples for 2 yrs, one of the more challenging places to drive, but on 2 wheels it is a dream, people respect you and give way. This for 2 basic reasons. Most drivers started on 2 wheels before moving to a car, so understand the problem and secondly, if you hit a 2 wheeler, you are guilty - simples. Close shaves were rare and remarkably when you got to a traffic jam, people actually moved slightly to let you through.

Totally agree - If you stand and look at the traffic in a lot of large Italian towns you would think it would be madness to ride a bicycle in that environment - get on and cycle and the waves seem to part before you - ditto Greece and for most of the western European countries - but not a lot of the old eastern European states - same traffic different people with different attitudes.

I think segregated infrastructure works well in urban areas, in the countryside less so because I couldn't see it being as cost effective.
