The UK is one of the few countries in Europe whose legal systems do not automatically assume liability of the driver in a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle.

Why should it? If the bicyclist is in the wrong, they're in the wrong. Fair dos if it makes people pay more attention to cyclists, but if a cyclist does something wrong and I was driving I wouldn't want to be liable for that. It's why I've got cycle third party insurance - encase I make a mistake.

You are missing the point Thomas, in most European countries it is for the driver to prove that the cyclist is in the wrong, whereas here as we all know it is the other way round. It is not about say that the driver is (or should be) always liable...

Another point which seems a big problem I think, is the cost of cameras and distance measuring devices. This gear costs more than some spend on a bike, so how many would take it up? And because you would need video evidence to back up the distance accusation, as some would falsify the distance to make a point, it becomes a very expensive idea that most could not afford.

Yep, I read something about it the other day (can't remember what or why) about the driver isn't "liable" in the sense I was thinking of. Now that I actually understand it I think it is a good idea and reckon it could result in safer driving for cyclists.

It might be suitable for the occasional "undercover police cyclist" but other than that probably useless. No point giving it to 'in gear' police cyclists...because if you overtake them too closely, well, I just can't imagine that happening....and if any of us had it, there would be a massive cost for us and not really any benefit....maybe if we got to keep the £60 fines it would be ;).

Actually I much preferred this offering from you! ;)

Ha Ha! Believe it or not, that's the worst cycle accident I've had (off the bike for three months! Couldn't move for two weeks - yes, that bad) and I have the least to show for it - no scars, nothing but aches & pains! Have to admit, it's just as well I edited out the following.....utterances.

Blimey, three months! I had a similar off but it only kept me off the bike for 30 seconds. Must be made of tougher stuff....;)

By the way, magnatom, having checked some of your YT vids (my, you have been a busy boy!) I have to admire your restraint when dealing with the cement-brained four-wheel driving prats that you come into contact with. Have to say that the air usually turns blue with my comments! And I have a loud voice (years of practice, no doubt)!

Aye, I've had comments about my accent, but you have quite a distinctive one as well.

Anyway, what do you mean you haven't seen my videos before! Don't you know who I am, dahling!?;)

Ha Ha! I'm enjoying this. Actually, I'm originally form nearer to you than you may imagine from my distinctive intonation. Let's just say, I've been around......

By the way, best of luck in your ton. I've done a couple of etapes.........the hardest thing I've ever done but what an experience.

Go on, spill the beans! Where abouts?

Aye the ton is going to be hard, but I'm really looking forward to it. Out for a 40 miler tomorrow in preperation.

Well, north but not that far north - Yorkshire originally. Have resided in the Big Smoke for 25 years and one thing can be guaranteed: the driving gets worse every year!
