on ways and means of de-icing a windscreen...

Also, imagine if you accidentally froze "John Thomas" to the car... try explaining that to the nurse in Casualty.

Shouldn't that be the "out" patients dept?

Actually a wallpaper stripper might work well, as the steam will lose its latent heat to melt the ice, which was formed when the original water lost its latent heat to make the ice. Changes of state use masses more energy than changes of temperature in the same state.

Latent heat of melting - 334 kJ/kg
Latent heat of evaporation - 2,270 kJ/kg

So steam should be pretty good at melting ice. ie every kg of steam will melt 2270/334 kg of ice, so that's about 6.8 kg of ice melted for every kg of steam. If I've remembered my physics.

Anyone gone to sleep yet ?

Scraper does the job for me. At least on the outside. Clearing the inside without leaving cold soggy upholstery and puddles is a different matter

Are we still talking about the possible result of wazzing?

My last car, a Puma had the heated windscreen, best thing since sliced bread. My current Focus doesn't because I was impatient and wanted the car on the forecourt rather than waiting for the one with the whizz bang windscreen to be brought from another dealership. Big mistake, now it's spray bottle de-icer every morning.

If I use de-icer I prefer the pump bottle as there are no propellent gases and more de-icer for the money. Couldn't find any this time so have a spray can. The other advantage is the pump bottle isn't as cold in the spray can.

I also place a fan heater in the car overnight plugged into a timer for about 10-15 minutes in the morning before I set off. Clear glass and warm interior.

I want a heated screen too. Seems really daft that it wasn't commonly available decades ago given Land Rover had them as an option in the late 60's. The demister in my car is rubbish. It looks like it was designed for a motor bike screen as it only clears the square foot of glass under the mirror until the engine is hot.

I have used the warm water method sucessfully in the past.
Years ago I had a heated washer water adaptor on my Land Rover. It was great having hot water to wash the screen with but in really cold weather, because the antifreeze would boil off, it left pure water which then froze on the wipers while driving making them useless.

IIRC the rear windscreen on the Puma is about the size of six large postage stamps.
