Defrost the car? Start engine, close door, arm the alarm, wait 15 min, come back & wipe remain ice off the windows get in nice warm car & drive away... ahh the money was well spend on the winter convenience pack

This is my plan B GrasB actually.

I do think it's a bit antisocial in a row of terraces with no off street parking - at 6.45am - but hey ho. It works

Isn't it illegal to leave a car unattended with the engine running?

I'm not sure - I read on the BBC (so I believe it) that it's illegal to drive with snow on the roof of your car - as it could blow into a car behind.

btw Arch - I don't really leave my engine on at 6.45am - but I do smother the thing in warm water.

As long as it's not hot - I get a big pan and fill it from the hot tap - it's never cracked any glass and clears the whole car

Clearly if you ever got a car and a baby elephant, a certain amount of training would be necessary, but definitelty possible.

I wonder how long a baby elephant can hold water in its trunk. That would warm it slightly...

Or would it be better to train a colony of leafcutter ants to march across the screen in formation, nibbling the ice off?

Tesco have started to sell "Pre-Icer" .... Mrs A_T bought some tonight as an experiment- will report in after we use it tomorrow... but, if I had some, I'd use cardboard myself. Passat quick clear windscreen was very good, bit sadly not got it anymore [the Passat].

You haven't got a bit of cardboard? What kind of household is that? Surely there's a box you could cut up...

An old blanket or something would do it.

A former boss of mine had a fancy (imported) Lexus... You could tell it when you were leaving for work and if it felt cold, it turned itself on and warmed everything up ready for departure.

I tried pre icer last winter. Didn't work, not even on frost never mind 3" of snow.

I'm designing and building electric trike, with 1+1 seating, at the moment and I was thinking of using the heated rear screen from a Land Rover Defender station wagon as a wind screen but I can't find out if it would be legal to have a heating element that is so visible.

From my understanding on the public road it is but private land it isn't. As my car sits on my drive it's fine.

mangaman, this is actually a defrost feature of the car. A little bit of overkill for our climate but it works really well. It's rather annoying but garage is to narrow for the car thats best suited for winter driving, at some point I might get the garage extended but this will block direct access to the rear of the house.
