There was one in the computing building when I was at uni. I never used it - walked up and down 6 flights of stairs instead.

It might have been ok if there was no-one else around and I could judge getting on and off myself, but surrounded by dozens of students.... no chance!
 
They had one at the AA head office but it was only a small thing for sending post to different floors in the building (that was about 12 floors). As the little tray came up you had to pop in the letter and press a big button like an organ stop for the floor you wanted it to pop out on. The button was on the moving bit so you had to poke your hand in the closing gap.

Somehow I remember from school German 44 years ago-

Seems to me I read that there are many also in Eastern Europe. Fascinating, but not for me. Big fan of stairs, myself. This only confirms my love of stairs, although I am impressed at the technical aspects.
