I love it! But I guess I wouldn't love it if I were disabled

I see that no new ones have been installed since 1974 due to issues of access. You do have to be a bit nimble.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
They used to have a few in a college in Birmingham. MR WD said it was interesting to use in his words. I doubt health and safety would allow them nowadays.

We had them at college and I heard that during Freshers' week some second year students were going over the top then coming down doing a handstand to confuse the freshers.

Nice story anyway.

I don't think they'd be allowed nowadays; your average British land whale might get stuck in one. A land whale passed in front of my car last night and set off the parking sensor.

Had them at Leicester Poly too. Your first time is a bit of a leap of faith.

I've just seen them for the first time thanks to the kerfuffle about them being banned and then reprieved. I can't believe they weren't banned years ago. Absolutely terrifying.

From the article ....
"There have been repeated claims that people have died riding paternosters, but no one has ever been able to produce a single case,” he said. “Sometimes you get an idiot who tries to take a ladder into one and that obviously can’t end well"

Really? Ever been in one?

They're not terrifying at all - they're great fun.

Oh, I have no doubt they are fun, but I'm thinking about the potential injuries to a hand or foot which gets trapped as it passes between the floors. Is there a safety space or a guard to stop trapping injuries? Does it have an emergency stop if it detects something trapped, and how fast does that engage? What happens if idiots try to get in when it is already halfway up and they mess it up? Any possibility of children using it leaves me cold.

I seem to recall hinged flaps on the one I used to use, designed to obviate the possibility of getting your hand or foot trapped between the edge of the car and the building floor. I certainly never heard of any injuries, and it was very well used.
