Indeed. At the time the Saff Coss and frenetic Cav/Calibra turbos were the only everyday cars that got a sniff of 200 ponies.

30 years on and my Missus drives a modest family car with 448 BHP, but back in the Rover 800s day there was talk of banning the Lotus Carlton for having a then biblical 377 ponies in a four door. Amazing how quickly the outrageous becomes every day.

But indeed, the T series turbo was a stoating engine. Similar performance to the 2 litre Cossie mill, but a lot less likely to grenade and didnt need a rebuild every 3rd Tuesday. The 600 turbo was an extremely capable Q car.

I was a fan of 80s and 90s Rovers. Such a shame the firm was asset stripped by BMW who wanted LR tech and patents for tje X5, and then used as a piggy bank by the Phoenix 4. What they did on a shoestring was remarkable, and continuing investment in the manner of the old British Aerospace owners could easily have kept it viable. Still, it is what it is.

I guess my other thought is, how much heavier/larger 'family cars' are now, in comparison to 20 years ago, or more

The R series wasnt a good 2 litre, but the T was a stoater, especially in later full fat 200 turbo form. Initial versions, IIRC, were cropped to about 170 ponies to avoid embarrassing the V6 models, but later ones got the full serving.

I had the 600 Turbo as a company car for a bit, I think it was allegedly 197bhp thru front wheels, was quick in a straight line but very scary if you pressed the loud pedal whilst you were still straitening the wheels out in the wet leaving a roundabout. I actually think the 306Xsi I had before it was quicker from AtoB despite a mere 125bhp as it was awesomely planted thru the twisty stuff.

Aye, 200 through the front wheels was a bit much back then.

Mind you, the Cossie struggled to contain 200 ponies through the rear. Not a good chassis.

Really nice looking example, really let down by the wheels though, just in my humble opinion. Could look so much better, lovely old car though.

IIRC on "Bangers & Cash" a little while ago they said something about Morris Minor vans being badged as Austins. I can't remember why though, as I was only half paying attention.
