And going from the ridiculous to the sublime, one o' them yellow cars. I'm childishly amused by the number plate.

Am I the only one that wouldn't mind the challenge of running the Rover in the last picture?

You're not alone, but all I could think of was this:

Back in the 80s a friend of my dad had a Wartburg Knight that was ahem - slightly tuned - he used it as a support car for a rallying and he was faster in it than some of the competitors, I still have the book he gave me 'Tuning racing 2-strokes' . He rode speedway in the 30's and had a few bad spills so he walked with quite an extreme limp which enabled him to get an Invacar invalid carriage - the blue three wheeler contrivence - he took out the wheezing Villiers 2-stroke and fitted a 500cc J.A.P engine from one of his speedway bikes - he got stopped doing 50mph in London (he lived near the Post Office tower) but didn't get prosecuted because the PC said no one would believe him if he called it in!

When I worked at the SAAB garage we had a 96 Monte Carlo sport 850 come in regularly, the mechanics used to almost fight over who got to work on it (then take it out for a test drive) the 'howl' of that 2 stroke triple was unreal. Similar engine to the Wartburg but the 'sport' had 3 carbs, 3 sets of points and 3 coils

My dad had an 850 sport he bought it from Charlie Bock just outside Wellington, Somerset and he used to tell the tale of his older brother Johnnie giving him a roasting for buying such a small engined car and then when they went somewhere together and the Saab left uncle Johnnie car in a blue haze .

I have no recollection as I would have been about 5 or 6 at the most

The Wartburg only lacked the extra carbs.

Without checking I thinkmits a Challenger. A fellow sergeant bought one just before I retired - he lived a 5 minute walk from work, so not having tk commute by car meant stuff like fuel consumption never bothered him.

This is one of a few houses along that road with interesting vehicles
I pass along it most working days

Another had a Porch 924 & an Alfa-Romeo 164(?), both now gone

There’s a couple of VW Type 3’s, a camper & a very nice blue panel van

Then, another house with a 2-door Range-Rover (VM engine) & a VW ‘bay’ camper

The Wartburg factory in Eisenacher, originally was owned by BMW, and pre WW2, built BMW cars there, after the War, the Soviet occupiers wanted to crate up the machinery & ship it back to Russia, however they were persuaded to leave the factory open, as long as they could build 5 cars in a week, the Soviets agreed and started shipping BMW cars & Motorbikes back to Russia, in 1952 BMW issued a lawsuit to stop them using their name, so the cars produced there became EMW's with a similar badge, but used red, instead of blue, the company later became known as VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach, and went on to manufacture the Wartburg models instead, so that rattling, coughing f*rting Wartburg isn't a BMW, it's BMW's East German cousin!
