By the standards of the day it was considered a sluggard. 0-60 in 15 seconds was hilariously poor for an engine of that size even then, barely any better than the near 17 seconds for the Landcrab from which the model it was derived.

The same motor in the lighter MGC was considered prehistrically poor and as a consequence it was a very poor seller indeed, so why they expected a different result slapping it in an even heavier car is anyone's guess.

But was it really underpowered by the standards of the day, and / or for a sedate luxury(ish) carriage?

I can remember how quick a mark 1 Escort Mexico felt with all 86 bhp but by today's standards it would seem very underwhelming , but I would still have one

Former colleague had a really old one of these, well past its best, so much so, I happened to be on the workshop cordless phone next to it, as I chatted to the other end, I pressed the front wheel with my foot.. and it physically moved. Oooer.
Dave, Dave, (his car) you need to look at this.

With proper pulling, you could tell the bearings were absolutely shot.

He drove it home , scrapped it.
