My ex had a 'C' reg (1986) Peugeot 205 GR 5 door, lovely car and quite sprightly with the 1360cc engine. We found out by accident that it'd do 80+ mph in 3rd gear. What happened was we got stuck in roadworks/contraflow and slowed down to about 30mph then slowly crept back up to cruising speed again, after about 5 minutes Pamela said to me "Is the car making a funny noise" so I turned the tape down and listened for a few seconds as I'd serviced the car the week before this trip to the Lake District then said "maybe if you changed up a gear or two it'd stop making the noise" not much difference in lever position between 3rd and 5th.

The XS was a lively little thing, but a bit strangled in UK spec. I think 83BHP in earlier versions, 75 in later ones.

The overseas version of the Rallye got a gem of a little 1.3 motor with 105 BHP,whereas for some reason they saddled us with the 75BHP XS motor in that model.

Clearly we must have upset someone in France.

Pretty sure they were all 85 bhp TU3S-engined.

Later ones were a cat strangled 75, from 1990 or thereabouts if my failing memory serves.

Edit. TU3MZ, SPi and cat, 75 PS, 73 BHP DIN, from G onwards.

Early versions had the Talbot XY engine, also 1360cc.

The later XR replaced it, no more power but CR ratios, firmer suspension, that sort of thing, but very bland appearance.

I've had a few Peugeots over the years but other than the Mi16 none of them really excited me. The Mi stuck to the tarmac like dog door to a picnic blanket.

We had a very high spec 405 as a pool.car, can't honestly remember if it was the Mi but...forking hell...that's all I need to say really

I recall talking to a former manager who had a 206 i think, quite new. I was in the market for a new car and asked him..'any good ?'
'About the most un-exciting car i ever owned, it does what it needs to but...'

And he wasn't even a car buff...
