The 1.6 205 GTi for me.

Barely any slower than the 1.9, the engine felt lively and fizzy, and the 15" rims on the 1.9 dont suit the car at all.

I had a 1.6 205 GTi back in 1987, only had it a year, got a promotion and swapped it for a Golf GTi. The 205 was a giggle but the Golf was much better on longer journeys, my next one a 1990 16V (last of the small bumpers) had Recaro seats, power steering, a full BBS body kit, Ronal alloys and a GTi Engineering RE1900 conversion, it was pushing out about 165 bhp, quick in those days.

Mk1 Golf GTi is huge disappointment to drive these days (my pal has one) the brakes are the biggest surprise, the pedal feel is shocking.

Blimey, I remember when 165bhp was really something!

The best hot hatch I had was a Citroen visa GTi absolute hoot, cheaper than a 205 , more practical than a mk 1 Golf as 5 doors and miles better than the Xr3i as not everyone else had one .

Oh and working at a Citroen dealership meant I got it for cost price and every time it got used for a demonstration I got a free tank of fuel

I always liked Citroens of that era. Very briefly had a BX GTi auto that looked stunning. Picked it up at auction to which I'd gone with a friend wjo was after a Rover 800. Couldn't get hold of my step brother (pre mobile phone days) who was after something similar so took a risk and bought it. A few days later he bought it from me.

Black, low miles, already and old car by then (1996-7ish) but it was in lovely condition throughout. Went well, lovely ride, very comfortable. A short while later someone ran up his arse in MK and wrote it off, was replaced with a Xsara as I recall.

My wife had a ZX Volcane and a bit later Ì had a ZX 16V both excellent cars, the 16V was lovely, really comfortable.
