I am a former white goods engineer. The boil wash every month is great advice, also you can get sachets of stuff to put in and help clean it. Other than that I'd recommend keeping your door and drawer open on the machine after a wash.

We don't have problems with the clothes smelling but quite often there is a eggy smell coming from the drain. We've used washing machine cleaner, bleach, V. hot wash cycles, but this only makes the smell go fo a week or so. We use Ariel liquid so it can't be build up of detergent (like powder does) but we do only wash at 30c.
I often use one of these laundry balls without detergent to stop build up of chemicals in my lycra gear.
The advice our repair man told us is......... low wash with liquid detergent is really bad for gumming up the machine and far better to use powder.
Then, as others have said, use higher temps regularly (if done often enough, no need for the machine to be empty) Wipe seals, door etc. after use and DO NOT close machine door when idle. Also, check the waste is connected at appropriate run and height.
Just what we've been told like.... but it seems to work well!!

Our washing machine is 17 years old, and doesn't have a 'fluff' trap.

99% of our washes are 40 degrees, with the odd one at 60. We've never done the super hot clear out thing I must admit, we've never seen the need. The stuff comes out smelling fine. We do leave the door ajar though.

Leave the drawer open as well, although if you've survived 17 years with it why would you listen to me now?

For those that don't have an old washing machine (17 years - must be an old WMxx Hotpoint, or Bosch group machine?) you start to get a biofilm - black slimey substance in your drawer, eventually it blocks the holes meaning the water finds an alternative route and doesn't take your detergent or (more likely) your softener.
