One Handers - ?

Noticed recently that more drivers appear to be holding the steering wheel with thie right hand at the 'twelve / one o'clock position.
Obviously no idea what their left hand is doing but wouldn't have though that where the right hand is would be condusive to good control on the occasion of a 'sudden event'.
Thoughts - ?

Had a one-hander yesterday
went to pick the kids up from school
it is at the back of an estate of houses so you have to drive through it
and there are cars parked on pavements everywhere (wide pavements so no problem with it blocking pushcharis etc)

but it does mean that you have to look out and allow cars coming to go first quite often
especially near school kicking out time

Anyway - this Volvo 4WD (or wannabe) was coming towards me
left hand on the steering wheel at the top

she was coming towards me and I could stop so I did
now most people raise their hand as a "thanks" sort of thing
I noticed that she didn;t
then I noticed that she couldn;t
she needed her right hand to hold her phone to her ear!!!

I did wonder if thats where this thread was going...

but you do read of drivers being prosecuted for doing it, and Ive certainly seen a driver watching xxx content on his phone & driving, as I cycled past wondering why they were being so dozy in traffic.

I don't know that it's more recent. I've noticed it since I started driving. In my experience more often than not it signifies an aggressive driver and I'm now conditioned automatically to think "knob". If the driver is also leaning to one side it looks more gangsta and that perception is increased tenfold.

Plus those who lower the seat/recline the back, so they're looking practically through the steering wheel, & just about visible over the door top

Reminds me of a trip with my Dad when I was a learner - so back when Moses were a lad

I was stopped signally right to turn into a side road at a point where the road had a weird wiggle where the oncoming traffic had tobend left a bit
Anyway - an Morris/Austin 1100 was coming toward me
Must have been summer as we could hear the engine clearly - rev just kept building - no changing gear
anyway - as she go closer I could see that the driver was a littl eold lady who also had the seat reclined and could JUST see over the steering wheel
So she was coming strait at me - I was waiting for her to follow the centre line and bend left
and waiting
and the rev kept building
and I was waiting
and suddenly her head dropped down below the whole windscreen and to her left
she just disappeared!

and kept coming towards me
no deviation following the road left
and the revs kept building - they were pretty high by now!!


I just floored the accelerated and let the clutch up fast
and shot across the road into the side road!!


as she passed - going THROUGH the spaces I had been - I looked in the rear view window and saw her head pop up
and the rev kept building for a few more seconds and then dropped

I do believe that driver height should be printed on the licence, and each car should have a minimum driver height on the V5. Too many short arrisses in big cars peering through the steering wheel.

A fringe benefit woulf it it getting a load of short arse school mums out of the tanks on the school run and into something more sensible. It'd be too much to hope theyd walk.

I have known a few short people who drive

most had a cushion to give them more visibility

funnily enough - my wife is only 4 foot 11 and never had a problem seeing when she used to drive

The technologies has existed for some time to stop drivers using phones whilst driving. It could be dome in a number of ways. But god forbid a safety measure to protect the more vulnerable.

Of the many dubious bits of driving I have witnessed, my probable favourite was driving behind an old couple in little a old car..
Picture the scene..
Man driving, wife, presumably, passenger. As the car started meandering towards the kerb, she reaches over & steers it back towards the centre of the lane. Car then weaves towards the white lines.. Helpful as ever, the missus leans over again & corrects the direction of travel.
As there was a roundabout about a mile up the road I had the time & opportunity to overtake as I didn't want to be a witness when they got to said roundabout 🤦‍♂️
