Sorry for lack of reply been busy for a few days!
I go a bit later than you - after the school run so it's about 9 when i get to the canal - the only human life i've seen was a bloke with two massive dogs and several women in their pyjamas 'avin a fag...
I had a meeting in town yesterday so did the run from Salford Quays to city centre by by towpath - I had the same problem as you round the old swing bridge - I found the way eventually after ending up on wrong side of the water then getting totally stuck in a fenced off business park type area... Now I know the way I'll do it again but I think I may just have to accept the fact that the stretch between Trafford Park and Pomona Docks is not great by road and not possible by towpath!

I didn't completely agree with the quickest or quietest options it gave me - but selecting 'most leisurely' gives really interesting suggestions.
