I discovered when changing my 10 speed cassette that the new one was slightly narrower than the old one and although the lock ring was tight the new cassette was slightly loose , had to put a 1 mm washer on before the lock ring

Have you checked that the plastic chassis for the cogs is intact? There were a lot of people complaining about cracked or broken plastic when Shimano first released the new Ultegra cassettes.

@bpsmith my 12-23 10sp Uletegra doesn't rattle, it may as unlikely as might appear have a wrong sized spacer, or is missing the inner spacer, not the spacer for a 10sp on an 11sp freehub, but a thin shim type.

Whilst the lock-ring may be correctly tightened, is the serrated washer between the lock-ring & smallest sprocket missing??

My Ribble didn't when it arrived, & it took a couple of rides to figure out where the rattling noise was coming from. Once I'd installed one, from my bits-boxes, it was silent.

If it's not there, the cassette might not tight correctly, and/or work loose
Washer is definitely there.

Borrowed a wheel and cassette of @cashy293 to test. We both run Ultegra 11-28, so easy swap. Same noises in same gears on both wheel/cassette combo's. That ruled out cassette and/or wheel faults.

Decided to play with the B tension screw. Whilst I thought it wasn't doing much adjustment, that's because it's very subtle between its extremes. It just wasn't allowing the derailleur to move very close to the cassette.

Noticed that the outer cable might be to blame for that, so carefully reshaped this to allow it to naturally position itself.

Also decided to strip the jockey wheels out, to lift the bearing seals and regrease.

Bike now sounds a lot better as a result of the above. Well chuffed.
