Quite amazing  and fascinating - a vegetarian was pretty rare in those days but he was obviously way ahead of his time nutritionally.

His balance must have been quite tricky too.

Wonder what the current record is ?

Perhaps not quite as good as that of this guy (a one-legged messenger cyclist in New York) - what an inspiration!

Greaves' bicycle had a bar extension with a cup attached to it into which the stump of his arm was inserted. I can't find a photograph of it, but there was one in an article on Greaves in Cycling Plus a few years back.

Officially, about 75,000 miles, though someone claimed 80,000 later. Details in the Wikipedia article on Walter Greaves.

yeah, remember it is 1936, probably 1 % of the amount of cars on the road back then. dunno why he didn't just get the bus.

46000 miles/365 days = 126 miles a day, EVERY day. Didn't it say he had a rough period with a problem with his leg which meant two weeks off the bike?

46000 miles / 351 days = 131 miles a day

All through winter too!

Forget your modern day 'respect', this man showed the true meaning of it!

Unreal, what a character. :wahhey:

I'd have a job driving that many miles in a year, never mind cycling.

Kudos.

Walter was also a fair folksinger as older regulars at the Topic Folk Club, Bradford (probably world's oldest - been going continuously since the late 50s) will confirm.

it makes you wonder tho, why hasn't he been given some sort of formal honor? i mean losing a limb to save a kids life!! then carrying on regardless. surely he's worthy?
