And the old Defy is gone  I'll miss him, but he's gone to a new loving home

Very happy with it :smile::smile:

@MikeW-71 did you get the email?
Our bike has been recalled
What do they mean with:
We have identified an issue with a small number of rear mech hangers that can result in the rear wheel slipping.
To ensure the continued safety of our customers, we are conducting a recall on models using this hanger and replacing those for all customers, along with the associated nut and bolt.As a precaution, please discontinue use of your bike until the new hangar has been fitted.

I don't really want to walk the bike to the train station, then half across town.
Any thoughts?

Yes, I got the email today.

The rear wheel of mine did slip on the first ride, but I did re-adjust the skewer before I rode it, so i thought it was my fault for not tightening it enough. I tightened it and it didn't slip again and I rode 20 miles with no further problem. They are being super-cautious telling people not to ride them.

It's a shame as it's an 80 mile round trip for me to my closest store.

What may be happening is the hanger is slightly too thick and the skewer can't get as good a grip on the dropout as it should. They'll fit a new hanger and replace the QR skewer. This is a really easy job, if they can post me the parts I'll fit it myself in 5 minutes.

To test, lift the rear wheel off the ground and hit the top of the tyre hard. If it doesn't slip, you'll be OK to ride it to the store, if it does, tighten the skewer a little and then it shouldn't.

Oh, I see, I was really wondering how a rear hanger could make a wheel slip.
I will go to the store to make an appointment next time I'm in town, the mechanic was so busy anyway, when I picked the bike up, the waiting list is probably until after Christmas.
I have no intention to ride my shiny new bike in this weather anyway, already got a soaking on riding it home from the shop.
If you do the repair yourself, will it not invalidate the warranty?

In the meantime I think I've seen what the problem actually is. The stock skewer just isn't up to the job, it doesn't tighten enough. I just popped on a stock Giant skewer and it tightens up a hell of a lot tighter than the Pinnacle one!

It also fixed the slight rear brake rub I was getting.

I've no had time to go to the shop: do you think if they change the rear derailleur, like the email suggested, the skewer should still be changed?
Will I have to tell them this?

The derailleur is fine. If the wheel slips, it will damage the hanger. Mine has, so I'll get the replacement anyway, but the real problem seems to be the skewer. That's the most important bit, and they are replacing them anyway.

With the new skewer on, I've tried to make mine slip again, and it hasn't, so I should be able to use it until I can get to the Kendal store, unless they can send me the parts.

Thanks for that Mike: I'll make an appointment, tighten the skewer before riding the bike the 4 miles to town.

Got the new hanger and skewer fitted this week, which has completely sorted the issue. Took them 5 mins in the store.

Me happy again.
Well, I popped into the store yesterday, explained that I don't have a car, could I please have the hanger to fit myself.
They gave me it! :wahhey:After first saying ".. don't think this is an option"
I told them I have the mechanic know how and they believed me
The shop said the skewer is not faulty, only a wrong machined nut on the hanger.
I bought a new proper Shimano skewer on line anyway, after your suggestion @MikeW-71.
Will fit the parts after Christmas, got some time off coming.
