Except passengers might legitimately need to make calls.

Why can't they pull over for that? Anyone remember the days when we lived perfectly happily without mobile phones? How many people really have such an essentail call to make that it can't wait a few seconds?

We're only talking about blocking signals within the car - or even just a meter around the drivers seat. It doesn't have to be an industrial strength signal.

Yes but there are mistakes and selfish behaviour. Everyone knows the rules on mobiles, its been all over the news, in mags and the papers, as has the research. But they choose to ignore it. And that is the point, they have chosen, its not like taking your eyes off the road for a fraction to look in a wing mirror and finding the car in front has stopped, this is a calculated decision and a weighing up of the risks of getting caught. ;)

Oh quite, I'm just thinking of ways to increase the punishment that stand the slightest chance of getting implemented...

I think that will come with the new CCTV camera systems. There are universities and firms around the world working on computer based systems. Oneday soon we could see a CCTV camera that picks out the plates and the driver, recognises what they're doing and records all this data to be processed by another part of the system and appropriate fines issued. Big brother is here to stay.

maybe even recognise patterns of behavior so as to send the fine out even before the act has been committed. :boxing:
