The dog woke me up in the small hours, asking to go out. Since this prevents me from scrubbing the carpet whilst calling her names, I groaned but got up and let her out into the garden. I had a wee myself ... and then went back to bed.

I woke up at 7, utterly confused about why all the lights were on and wondering where the dog was.

The penny dropped, I raced to the back door. No dog. Back to bedroom, threw some clothes on, got to the front door ... and there she was, crying with desperation. "I had to stay out ALL NIGHT. It was dark and I was scared. I love you."

I think she'd spent the night sleeping under my bedroom window. I feel horribly guilty. She will be one spoilt Labrador today.

She might hold it in and won't wake you in the night next time though!

Repeat after me:

I am a bad dog owner
I am a bad dog owner
I am a bad dog owner
I am a bad dog owner
I am a bad dog owner

Oh Jo!!
Having done this myself several times last year I can understand excatly how you feel xx
My wee doggy (now RIP) developed diabetes & needed to wee every hour, I feel alseep on the kitchen floor once waitng for her to come bcak in LOL!

Oh dear Jo  My dog would never let me forget. He's patient but then he scratches and finally lets out a needy high pitched bark which becomes more urgent. Did she not make a noise at all?

No. She got locked in the shed once and I spent hours going round calling for her. Was about to call the dog warden to report her missing when I thought to check the outbuildings. She didn't make a sound until she heard me opening the door.

*sigh*

I feel horribly guilty.

Don't beat yourself up about it, it won't have done her any harm.

One of mums dogs doesn't vocalise to let you know you've forgotten him and he's spent many hours on the wrong side of gates or shut in sheds and stables.

I've done that a couple of times. Feel guilty at first, but don't forget that a dog has a lovely warm coat, a Lab doubly so, so she won't have come to any harm.

I also locked my dog in the garge once!
Got home on my bike after a 70 mile ride - it was dark, cold & pouring rain with rain - It had been hot & sunny when I set out with no rain forecast so I was ill prepared for the sudden change.
#1 saw me from the window & walked down the drive to meet me, he unlocked the garage for me & I hung my bike up and went inside to thaw out, hot bath, fluffy towels, hot chocolate Mmmmmmm.
3 hours later it was time for Rabit (yes that was her name!) insulin injection - Only we couldn't find her! Searched the house, the garden, the bcak gate was open OMFG!! I ran down the drive to the main road, as i passed the garage I heard a YAP! She had obviouksy followed #1 down the drive & gone rumaging round the boxes at the back, without either of us even noticing!
One very happy Jack Russell got spoilt very rotten by one very guilty mummy that night

I can predict that if you leave your partner and your dog shut out in the rain for a few hours, only one of them will be happy when they're let back in...

Eh? Being left outside? Whats the problem?

Only that she's a wimp. She'll go swimming in the sea when it's so cold that the rock pools have frozen over but threaten any of her creature comforts and her world ends. Last time I had to remove a thorn from her pad, she cried and whimpered and shook. Pathetic baby
