Went on a not-well-sign-posted nature trail today, ended up dragging the family through a few fields and noticed our shoes and legs went orange.

Have we been covered in some fatal death spores, human killing fertiliser, agent orange, anthrax...or is it just "crown rust"*?

Yep. Have you written your will? No time to lose :okay:
Don't be too hasty, help is available...
"Proper care is the preferred treatment for rust fungi, but fungicides can help severe rust infections. Fungicides containing chlorothalonil or mancozeb, which can help with rust fungi outbreaks. Since fungicides often contain toxic chemicals, it is important to follow manufacturer instructions carefully. It usually takes multiple applications to get rid of rust."

I thought I 'd get some grief for this, but surely one serious answer is out there?
You gave the best answer yourself. Rust Fungus.
