Not much point with the ground as cold as it is and the greenhouse still frozen.

Ah but there will come a time when the ground will become unfrozen. ;)

Got loads of seeds from last year, I'm hoping they will be still viable.

I always use up the previous year's left-over - the skinflint that I am:smile:

Personally I am holding back this year to see what the weather is going to be like as there is nothing worse that getting seedlings going and then stopping them as the weather is too bad outside. If it looks bad then I think I'll plant all my first earlies in the greenhouse mid/late Feb and then pop the main crop in the veg plot when its warmer.

Any of you Londoners (or surrounding environs) looking for some good spuds for this year should try the London Potato fair at the end of Jan. You can get some interesting heritage varieties there (we got Mr Little's Yetholm Gyspies this year).

There's a seed swap there as well.

I'm still on the waiting list for 3 allotments. Be nice to get a patch sometime this year.

I need a spud that will do well on chalky soil. Any advice?

I would expect that it might be better making a raised bed and filling it with compost from a garden centre. Chalky soil is a bit to shallow to grow spuds in, you could try and dig compost into the soil to improve it and make it a bit less alkaline.

Or growing them in grow bags, I just bought a couple of those garden tidy canvas bags for £3.99 each last year and got a decent crop out of them.

I happen to know that Gromit makes mighty fine chips...

I'll probably kill some herbs in my window boxes again this year. And maybe grow some salad in one...

We've grown potatoes in containers for the last few years - everything from compost bags, trugs, and bags sold for growing potatoes in. The main problem as opposed to growing them in the soil is making sure they have enough water. Might try growing some in the ground this year.
Yet to check out what varieties our local garden centre has (only about 5 doors away from my LBS - so convenient).
