Was that one of the "V" courses. Did have a reputation. I rode the "O2" course a couple of times in "limit" events. Although it was a fast courses, it was always very windy. For one event, I rode over from Merseyside, the night before and stayed in the youth hostel. No wonder I didn't do a fast time.
The late Alan Barker, offered me a lift back but I declined and rode back after the event.
Never managed to go under the hour on any course. Closest was a 1:1:52.
I used to ride middlemarkers events on the old O2 course at Blyth in the early 1980’s. I rode the Sheffield Highgate Wheelers event for people who had not previously beaten 1.03.00. It was a fast, float day and I came in with 1.03.08, a PB at the time and it still is. The event was won with a 57.
I was one of the few who were still eligible to ride the event again the following year, so I entered it again. For the one and only time in my life, I was the scratchman, off at number 120, in theory the fastest man in the field. Sadly, I couldn’t match my performance from the previous year and I came in with a 1.06 something.
