The article touches upon it, but cycling really did bring big changes for women, albeit at first just for the wealthier ones who could afford a bike. It allowed them to go beyond what was called the 'urinary leash', which is to say women couldn't go far, even in towns, because there were only men's public toilets not women's. The bicycle meant they could go further and when they became more affordable it opened up further avenues for women in terms of travel to work.
