It made me check on the original cast.

Indeed - none of Akira Kurosawa's cast are still alive.

As for the pale imitation, the only ones apart from those mentioned above I can remember are Yul Brynner and Horst Bucholz. Is Brynner still alive?

He died a long time ago. I think Steve McQueen was in it as well. And James Coburn.

Yul Brynner died.....believe it or not....1985.

There were several with very dark hair. Horst whatsit (who played Chico), Michael Vaugn....Yule Brynner
