Does anyone know what's happened to the ordnance survey maps that were shown at a certain zoom level on the sustrans website and android app? Haven't used it for a few months and when I came to use it today they'd gone (sure it had them previously). Have they been substituted with useless open cycle map data?

The OS maps are still showing on my iPhone app, but do appear to have gone from the website. I keep getting a prompt to update the maps on the iPhone though, so I have a suspicion... It would be a shame to loose them though because they are much better than the Open Source maps for where we are.

I'm a big fan of OS too, but they don't always make it easy, or financially practical, for other organisations to use their mapping.
Meanwhile, if the Open Source (OSM) mapping in your area is not good you can take matters in to your own hands. IME spotting a glitch and needing a GPX track of where the road/path goes so that you can improve it, can be quite good motivation for getting out on days when you might otherwise not bother, or to go to new places.

Have just opened the app on my tablet which I haven't used for a while and it showed an OS map which must have been cached from about 2 months ago. As soon as I panned and zoomed about though that was lost.

Bikehike still seem to display OS tiles. The great thing about the sustran app was the ability to cache the maps for off line use.

I'm afraid I'll never be converted to the OCM maps, irrespective of accuracy, they just don't have the natural intuitive feel that the OS maps have (IMO) or give the same picture of an area. In the same way that I prefer MS office to openoffice/libreoffice.

on bikehike their licence to use os mapping only allows a certain amount of "hits" or "usage" per day so once their limit is reached os maps were unavailable. Thats how it used to be dont know if anything has changed.
i wonder if thats the case with the sustrans site?

Once OS usage was reached on bikehike it used to show nothing, but for some time now I think it now reverts to OS maps from google which aren't at the same scale.

I wonder why they don't use Bing maps as they have an OS licence through their purchase of Multimap.
You're right, I remembered incorrectly:

"Updated to display the Bing OS maps when the Ordnance Survey tile limit is reached - so OS maps will be available for longer.
Note - the Bing maps also have limits so these will run out too. However, Bing map usage is limited by session (not tile count) so, once you have a Bing map session, don't close it until you are sure you are finished with it.
The Bing maps include the 1:25K maps."

Play Store What's new says "Unfortunately due to rising costs we are having to change the 1:25,000 map background to be a copyright-free equivalent."
