Sounds like either your PSU (power supply unit) has dies, or your motherboard has. Do you use a surge protector, if not I'd suggest investing in one.
I'm just impressed that your PC has lasted so long!

Oh and yeah, get a mac. I converted last year and they are so much better.
 
Just an outside chance that the small rechargeable button battery on your motherboard that powers the bios has finally bit the dust. Rare, but it happens. I had a similar thing occur on my old base unit - replaced battery (£2) and all has been well since.

I looked inside the beast this morning. I saw two small wires were disconnected but unfortunately there was a choice of 4 sockets that they could go in. So I took it to local Computer World and they say they will tell me what is wrong tomorrow.

I hope the HD is OK as I have just discovered that I have cleared my back-up from a USB, I needed all the memory to export files from the client that I am currently working for.
