Had one made before I took up cycling, lost a couple of inches round the waste and put on a few on the thighs.
I'd say better than an off-the-peg from High Street, as you can choose style, cloth, lining, etc, but still not as good as a local tailor who will do fittings.

I got one made by a local high-street tailor and it was a disaster; took weeks and was a poor fit and didn't last well. Never again. Now I got to Boundary Mill Stores and get three good suits for the price of one. Simples.

The suits Prince Charles wears cost upwards of £3000.00 and unless you pay that much you are probably better off buying a ready made. I have had two tailored suits in my lifetime and both were a disaster, the first one cost £15 from Burtons and the second a lot more but I wore it twice as I looked like the HBofND in it.

Two thoughts: One, as someone said earlier, it largely depends on how odd you are. If you're a weird shape, made to measure makes sense. If you're not, you're better off going for good quality off the peg. Two, I've also bought my last couple of suits off ebay (I'm a bit odd, but not much) then had them altered by a local high st outfit. The Jeff Banks only needed the trousers lengthened - with tailoring it came to about £40 all told, and it's a lovely suit that now fits me perfectly. T'other needed both jacket and trousers adjusted - it's now a really sweet Ted Baker that fits nicely - about £70 all told for that one.

Tailored and made to measure are two different things. Made to measure is ok but not vastly better than most suits bought off the peg. You have the ability to speck the detail and material and if you are outside normal size ranges. Tailored is much more personal, going for a fitting while the suit is still in it's construction phase gives you the ability to get the fit just as you want it.
I now buy off the peg suits as I get through them rapidly due to the nature of my work. In my youth I would regularly go to Laveries or Fine Tailoring in Manchester and get my suits and trousers tailored. Weird I know

Whether it's tailored or made to measure, the cut of a suit should make you look more like Del Boy than Rodney.

About twelve years ago for reasons I can't remember I decided to have a suit made in Savile Row. It was for my wedding, but I can’t remember why I didn’t get a good quality off the peg suit. Anyway I went to the oldest established firm in the street Davis and Son. http://www.daviesandson.com/

I was treated with respect and deference, like an old valued client, though it was my first time and I was a little intimidated. I was measured and asked about my suit and my specific requirements, I wanted a something a bit special, a longer jacket than usual and trousers of a certain cut and I wanted pockets where one does not usually have pockets. I decided that, if I was going to have a suit made for my wedding, I needed to be able to use it for work too, well, that’s how justified it to my-self anyway

When I was given the price I think the colour must've drained out of my face because the tailor winced a little. However I agree to the sale and paid a deposit. Then I had a sleepless night about how much this suit was going to cost me, that night I resolved to cancel the order, even though I’d lose my deposit. The next morning though, I had calmed down and decided to proceed after all.

I had to go for two more fittings for the suit and it took about four weeks to before it was finished.

What turned out was the most beautiful, the most comfortable and sharpest suit I have ever seen. It fitted like it was supposed to and I felt great wearing it. I can still fit in it, and though it’s had some repairs in the last six years ‘cos I'm clumsy it still looks good, though the colour is not what I would choose today.

It cost £2500.00...that’s when £2500.00 was a lot of money

I doubt very much if the suits offered in the first post are bespoke, but are probably great for the money.
