I guess you were jesting, but it looks as if his legs/body kinda folds and his helmet hits the ground pretty hard, so maybe it helped take some of the impact.

I know nothing of the sport but im kinda suprised he wasnt wearing more body armour.

.... makes me wince- that video of the bloke on his road bike crossing the bridge on the steel arch could have endded like this so easily but people thought he was clever. Takes all sorts.
